What We Packed for a Week in the Smoky Mountains

How We Fit Four People's Tennessee Adventure into Just Backpacks

One of the questions we heard most after returning home was:

"How did you pack for a week in Tennessee using only backpacks?"

The answer? A lot of planning—and a willingness to pack only what we knew we'd actually use.

Since we were flying with Allegiant Air, every traveler was limited to one personal item. That meant my husband, Alfonso, our nieces Daya and Gaby, and I each purchased a new backpack specifically sized to meet Allegiant's personal-item requirements.

Looking back, it was one of the smartest decisions we made. Traveling light meant no checked baggage fees, no waiting at baggage claim, and no dragging heavy suitcases through airports or mountain cabins.

Pack for Your Adventure, Not Your Closet

Before we packed a single shirt, we looked at our itinerary.

Our days would include:

  • Hiking to waterfalls

  • Tubing through mountain rivers

  • Exploring caverns

  • Riding a mountain coaster

  • Walking through mountain towns

  • Casual dinners

  • Flying with backpacks only

That meant every item had to earn its place.

Instead of planning outfits, we packed for experiences.

The Shoes That Earned Their Space

If there was one category where every item proved its worth, it was our shoes.

Each of us packed:

  • Hiking shoes

  • Water shoes

  • Comfortable sandals

The hiking shoes were easily our most-used pair. Whether we were exploring trails or walking through town, they were comfortable enough to wear all day.

Our water shoes were absolutely essential for tubing and navigating slippery rocks around waterfalls.

The sandals were perfect for relaxing in the evenings after long days on our feet.

But my biggest surprise?

Hiking toe socks.

I'd heard people rave about them, but now I understand why. They helped prevent blisters, kept my feet more comfortable on long hikes, and quickly became one of my favorite purchases from the entire trip.

Clothing That Worked Hard

When you're packing only a backpack, every piece of clothing needs to work more than one job.

We focused on lightweight, comfortable pieces that mixed and matched easily:

One thing I learned?

The Smoky Mountains don't care if you repeat an outfit.

Comfort always wins.

Wellness on the Trail

One thing that made this trip different from many vacations we've taken was that we intentionally packed products that helped us feel our best each day.

We brought along our Melaleuca hydration packets, which gave us something refreshing to drink beyond just water, along with fiber-based drink options that helped keep us feeling balanced throughout the trip. They quickly became part of our daily routine before heading out for hikes or long days exploring.

For skincare, we packed Neora skincare for the adults and Melaleuca skincare for the younger adults. After hours in the sun, having trusted products on hand made a big difference in how our skin felt at the end of each day.

We also made sure to pack practical essentials like sunscreen, Sun Shades SPF lip balm, and shampoo and conditioner packets instead of full-size bottles. Those small swaps saved space and made packing much easier.

If you're trying to pack light, travel sizes and multi-use products are your best friend.

Stanley vs. Shaker Cups

I honestly thought our Stanley cups would be the MVP of the trip.

I was wrong.

My husband and I brought steel shaker cups with locking lids so we could easily mix our drink packets and protein on the go. All we needed was water and ice, and we never had to worry about spills.

We packed both our Stanleys and our shaker cups, expecting to use the Stanleys for water throughout the day.

Instead, the shaker cups won by a landslide.

They were lighter, easier to carry, fit better inside our backpacks, and took up far less room. Since we were constantly refilling our water throughout the day, convenience mattered more than appearance.

The girls had Stanleys, and while they worked fine, they felt a little limiting and heavy on the trails.

The Stanleys still came in handy around our accommodations, but for hiking and sightseeing, the shaker cups became our go-to.

Sometimes the simplest option really is the best one.

Inside we packed:

Nothing fancy.

Just practical items we reached for over and over again.

Travel Snacks That Saved Us Money

Packing snacks before we left was one of the easiest ways we stayed on budget.

Our backpacks included:

  • Protein bars

  • Beef jerky

  • Peanut butter crackers

  • Strawberries

  • Stroopwafels

Having snacks ready meant we weren't tempted to buy overpriced convenience food between attractions.

What We'd Leave Home Next Time

Packing light teaches you what's truly necessary.

Here's what we'll skip next time:

  • Too many outfit options

  • Extra shoes "just in case"

  • Heavy toiletries

  • Hair tools we never touched

Every trip teaches you something, and this one reminded us that less really can be more.
