Tubing Through the Smokies
Why Floating Down the River Became Our Favorite Day in Tennessee
Some adventures require planning.
Others require courage.
And some simply ask you to sit back, let the current take over, and enjoy the ride.
Our tubing day in Townsend, Tennessee, ended up being all of those things—and by the time we climbed out of the river, every one of us agreed it had become one of our favorite memories from the entire trip.
If you're considering adding river tubing to your Smoky Mountains vacation, here's everything we learned before, during, and after our day on the water.
Why We Chose Townsend
When most people think of the Smoky Mountains, they picture busy streets in Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg.
Townsend felt completely different.
Known as the "Peaceful Side of the Smokies," it offered a slower pace, beautiful scenery, and a river that seemed made for lazy summer afternoons.
It was exactly the kind of experience we wanted.
A chance to unplug.
Laugh.
Cool off.
And simply enjoy being together.
What to Expect
Tubing isn't difficult, but it's definitely an adventure.
You'll spend a few hours floating downstream, occasionally bumping over gentle rapids, navigating shallow areas, and laughing every time someone spins around unexpectedly.
The water is clear.
The scenery is beautiful.
And every bend in the river offers another postcard-worthy view of the Smokies.
If you're expecting an adrenaline rush, this isn't it.
If you're looking for a relaxing family adventure with just enough excitement to keep everyone smiling, you've found it.
The Water Temperature
Let's talk about the first thirty seconds.
The water is cold.
Mountain-river cold.
The kind that makes you gasp when you first step in.
But here's the surprising part...
After a few minutes, it feels amazing.
On a warm Tennessee afternoon, that chilly water became one of the best parts of the experience.
By the end of the float, none of us wanted to get out.
Safety First
One thing I appreciated most was how family-friendly the experience felt.
Even so, a little preparation goes a long way.
Here are a few things I'd recommend:
Wear secure water shoes.
Listen carefully to the outfitter's instructions.
Stay with your group.
Protect your phone in a waterproof pouch.
Bring plenty of water for before and after your float.
Apply sunscreen before you get in the river.
The goal is simple:
Relax and enjoy the ride.
The Funniest Moments
No family tubing trip is complete without a little chaos.
There were unexpected spins.
A few gentle collisions.
Someone inevitably floated into the wrong person.
And there was plenty of laughing every time someone declared,
"I've got this!"
...right before drifting into another tube.
Those unplanned moments are the ones that still make us smile when we talk about the trip.
They'll probably become part of our family stories for years to come.
What We Packed
Our tubing bag was simple but carefully planned.
Here's what we actually used:
Swimsuits
Rash guards
Lightweight athletic clothes
Sunglasses with straps
Dry bag
Quick-dry towel
Portable fan for afterward
Snacks for after the float
Everything fit into one easy-to-carry backpack.

Hydration Is More Important Than You Think
Even though you're surrounded by water, it's easy to forget how much time you're spending in the sun.
Before we floated, we mixed our Sustain packets into our shaker cups and made sure everyone drank plenty of water.
It was one of those little habits that paid off later in the day.
Between the sunshine, hiking earlier in the week, and spending hours outdoors, staying hydrated helped all of us feel better throughout the trip.

After the River
Once we climbed out of the tubes, everyone was smiling.
Tired.
A little sun-kissed.
Ready for food.
There's something about spending hours outdoors that makes even the simplest meal taste incredible.
After changing into dry clothes, we wandered through Townsend, did a little shopping, and enjoyed the slower pace that makes this little mountain town so special.
It was the perfect balance to our more active hiking day.
Would We Do It Again?
Without question.
In fact, if we return to the Smokies, tubing will probably be one of the first things we book.
It was affordable.
Relaxing.
Beautiful.
And one of the few activities where everyone—from teenagers to adults—was laughing from beginning to end.
Sometimes the simplest adventures become the most memorable.
This was definitely one of them.
