The Campground We Look Forward to Almost as Much as the Vacation
There are places you stay because they're convenient.
And then there are places you actually get excited to return to.
For us, that's Point South KOA.
Honestly, if our road trip is taking us anywhere along I-95, we're already talking about the coffee before we even leave the driveway.
Not because it's the closest campground.
Not because it's the biggest.
Not because it has the fanciest amenities.
Because it somehow feels like coming home.
Over the years we've stayed at a lot of KOAs. We've found plenty that are nice, a few that were just okay, and some we'll probably never visit again.
But Point South?
We actually plan our travel days around staying here.
That's about the highest compliment we can give a campground.
It Doesn't Feel Like an Interstate Campground
You know how most overnight campgrounds feel...
Check in.
Set up.
Sleep.
Leave.
Point South KOA isn't like that.
The minute you walk into the main building you realize someone actually cared about creating an atmosphere.
The retro décor.
The vintage touches.
The music playing.
The comfortable places to sit.
It feels less like checking into a campground and more like discovering a hidden roadside gem.
The Coffee Shop Has Become Part of Our Tradition
This is where they completely won us over.
Every trip starts with coffee.
Not the kind you hurriedly make in your camper before getting back on the road.
Real coffee.
Lattes.
Frozen coffees.
Espresso drinks.
It's become part of our tradition.
By the time we're walking toward the coffee counter, vacation has officially begun.
The Camp Store Is Actually Fun
Most campground stores sell what you forgot.
This one does that...
...but then keeps going.
One minute you're grabbing ice.
The next you're looking at home décor, unique gifts, local finds, seasonal decorations, and somehow convincing yourself you definitely needed that cute sign.
I never mind wandering around in there.
Everywhere You Look There's Something Fun
One of my favorite things about Point South KOA is that it encourages you to stay awhile.
Instead of everyone disappearing into their campers, people are outside.
Kids are on the playground.
Families are playing giant yard games.
People gather around the enormous community fire pit in the evenings.
The pool becomes the afternoon hangout.
There's always something happening without it ever feeling crowded or noisy.
It has this laid-back atmosphere that's hard to describe until you've experienced it.
The Train Cars
I absolutely love that they didn't stop at traditional cabins.
They have beautifully restored train cars you can actually stay in.
Every time we walk by them, I think how much fun it would be to book one for a future trip.
It's one more example of how this campground embraces personality instead of being just another place to spend the night.
Even the Bathrooms Are Beautiful

Writing about bathrooms sounds strange.
But campers understand.
The bathhouses here are immaculate.
Not just clean—beautiful.
The retro styling carries throughout the buildings, and you can tell the staff genuinely takes pride in keeping everything spotless.
It's one of those little details that says a lot about the people who run the campground.
The People Make the Difference
At the end of the day, amenities are nice.
But people are what make us come back.
Every interaction we've had with the staff has been friendly, welcoming, and genuine.
You never feel like you're just another campsite number.
You feel like they're honestly glad you're there.
That kind of hospitality is becoming harder to find, and it's one of the biggest reasons we'll continue coming back.
Why We Keep Coming Back
Some places become traditions without you realizing it.
You stop because it's convenient.
Then you stop because you enjoyed it.
Eventually...
You start planning your entire trip around staying there.
The coffee.
The retro atmosphere.
The camp store.
The train cars.
The giant fire pit.
The yard games.
The spotless bathhouses.
The friendly staff.
It's all of those little things together that make this one of our favorite campgrounds anywhere.
Some places are simply where you spend the night.
Point South KOA has become part of the vacation itself.
