Hiking Rainbow Falls

Everything We Wish We'd Known Before Hiking One of the Smokies' Most Beautiful Waterfalls

When we started planning our Tennessee graduation trip, there was one adventure that made every single itinerary.

Rainbow Falls.

The photos were breathtaking.

The reviews promised one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Smoky Mountains.

And after seeing it for ourselves…

I can honestly say it was worth every step.

But if you're planning to hike Rainbow Falls, there are a few things I wish someone had told us before we laced up our boots.

This isn't just a trail guide.

It's our real experience—the good, the challenging, the funny, and everything in between.

What to Know Before You Go

Rainbow Falls is one of the most popular hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and it's easy to understand why.

The trail follows a beautiful mountain stream, crossing bridges, weaving through old-growth forest, and gradually climbing until it reaches the tallest single-drop waterfall in the national park.

Trail Snapshot

  • ๐Ÿฅพ Distance: About 5.4 miles round trip

  • ⛰️ Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous

  • ⏱️ Time: Allow 3–5 hours

  • ๐Ÿ’ฆ Waterfall Height: Approximately 80 feet

  • ๐Ÿšป Restrooms: At the trailhead only

  • ๐Ÿป Wildlife: Stay aware and follow park guidelines

If you're reasonably active and take your time, it's absolutely achievable—but don't underestimate it.

The Climb

One thing that surprised us most was that the trail climbs almost the entire way.

It's never impossible.

But it definitely keeps reminding you that you're hiking in the mountains.

Thankfully, there are plenty of beautiful places to stop, catch your breath, sip some water, and enjoy the scenery.

Looking back, those pauses became part of the experience instead of interruptions.

The Funny Moments

Every family hike has "those" moments.

The conversations that get sillier as everyone gets more tired.

The debates over how much farther it could possibly be.

The encouragement that turns into laughter.

The random comments that somehow become inside jokes.

Those are the moments that don't show up in Instagram photos, but they're often the memories that last the longest.

If you've ever hiked with family, you know exactly what I mean.

What Surprised Us

A few things caught us completely off guard.

The first was how peaceful the trail felt.

Even with other hikers around, there were long stretches where all we heard was rushing water and birds singing overhead.

The second surprise was how rewarding the journey itself became.

Yes, the waterfall is spectacular.

But so are the towering trees, moss-covered rocks, bridges, and mountain streams you pass along the way.

The destination is incredible.

The trail is what makes it unforgettable.

The Waterfall

Then we rounded the final bend.

Rainbow Falls.

All the climbing.

All the sweating.

All the tired legs.

Suddenly none of it mattered.

Watching the water crash over the rocks while cool mist drifted through the air was one of those moments where everyone simply stopped talking.

Sometimes nature has a way of reminding you to slow down.

This was one of those moments.

What We Packed

Packing wisely made the hike so much more enjoyable.

Our daypacks included:

And perhaps the most underrated item of the entire trip...

Hiking toe socks.

I wasn't sure they would make much of a difference.

I was wrong.

They helped keep my feet comfortable, reduced rubbing, and quickly became one of my favorite hiking purchases.

Staying Hydrated

If there's one piece of advice I would give anyone hiking Rainbow Falls, it's this:

Drink more water than you think you need.

The elevation gain, summer temperatures, and steady climb can sneak up on you.

Our shaker cups made it easy to mix our Melaleuca hydration packets throughout the hike, and I truly think they helped us stay energized.

Recovery Matters Too

One thing people don't always talk about is what happens after the hike.

Once we were back at the hotel, we focused on helping our bodies recover.

That meant:

  • Drinking plenty of water

  • Stretching tired muscles

  • Taking time to rest

  • A good shower

  • Comfortable clothes

  • Neora skincare after a day in the sun

Sometimes recovery is part of the adventure.

Would We Do It Again?

Absolutely.

Knowing what we know now, we'd still choose Rainbow Falls.

We'd simply start a little earlier, bring plenty of water, and remind ourselves that the climb is part of what makes reaching the waterfall feel so rewarding.

Not every memorable experience is easy.

Sometimes the ones that challenge you become the ones you remember most.

Coming Up Next

Our legs were tired, but our adventure was far from over.

Next, we're trading hiking boots for water shoes as we head to Townsend, Tennessee, for one of the most fun—and refreshing—days of the entire trip: floating down the river on a tubing adventure.
