Exploring Pigeon Forge for the First Time
Slowing Down, Wandering, and Letting Vacation Begin
Tuesday morning felt like the real beginning of our Tennessee adventure.
The night before, we'd arrived late, checked into our airport hotel, and gone straight to bed. We woke up rested, excited, and ready to finally experience the Smoky Mountains we'd been dreaming about for months.
There was no pressure to rush.
No strict schedule.
Just an entire day waiting to unfold.
Sometimes the best vacations begin slowly.
A Vacation Tradition at Cracker Barrel
We have one travel rule in our family:
We try not to eat anywhere we can eat at home.
But every rule deserves an exception.
Technically, the closest Cracker Barrel to us is still about an hour away, so we decided it counted.
Truthfully, though, that's not why we went.
Before the "white girl" married into the family, Cracker Barrel wasn't really part of our family traditions. Somewhere along the way, that changed, and now it has become one of those places that officially signals vacation has begun.
This trip was no different.
Coffee filled the table.
Warm syrup covered stacks of pancakes.
French toast disappeared almost as quickly as it arrived.
And for the first time, we ordered the Strawberry Cheesecake Pancakes.
They absolutely lived up to the hype.
Looking back, I don't remember rushing through breakfast.
I remember lingering.
Talking.
Laughing.
Planning the day ahead.
Sometimes breakfast becomes part of the destination.
Coffee Makes Every Town Better
No matter where we travel, we always seem to find ourselves searching for good coffee.
Not because we need caffeine.
Because coffee slows us down.
It gives us a reason to sit.
To people watch.
To soak in a place before running off to the next attraction.
Travel isn't just about checking places off a list.
It's about creating little pauses you'll remember years later.
Our First Stop: The Island
After breakfast, we headed to one of the places everyone seems to recommend:
The Island in Pigeon Forge.
Now I understand why.
It's difficult to describe because it isn't one attraction.
It's dozens of little experiences gathered together.
Boutique shops.
Sweet treats.
Music.
Beautiful landscaping.
A giant Ferris wheel watching over everything.
Photo opportunities around nearly every corner.
Instead of trying to see everything, we simply wandered.
We wandered into stores because they looked interesting.
We laughed over souvenirs we'd never actually buy.
We admired home dΓ©cor that made us wish we had more room in our suitcases.
And somehow, no one seemed to care what time it was.
That may have been my favorite part.
Capturing the Memories
One stop we couldn't resist was the photo booth.
There's something wonderfully nostalgic about squeezing into a tiny booth, making ridiculous faces, and walking away a few minutes later with a strip of printed memories.
In a world where almost every picture lives on our phones, those little printed photo strips feel extra special.
They're already tucked into one of my travel journals.
I'm pretty sure they'll stay there forever.
Comfortable Shoes Are Worth Every Penny
If I could give only one piece of shopping advice for Pigeon Forge, it would be this:
Wear comfortable shoes.
You'll walk far more than you expect.
Between shopping, wandering Market Street, exploring attractions, and simply taking everything in, the miles add up quickly.
Luckily, we'd packed exactly the shoes we needed.
Comfort wins every single time.

Shopping Without a Plan
One thing I loved most about The Island was that we weren't shopping for anything specific. We weren't hunting for souvenirs.
We weren't checking items off a list.
We simply enjoyed discovering stores we couldn't find back home.
Sometimes we'd walk out with nothing.
Sometimes we'd find the perfect little keepsake.
But every shop added another layer to the story of our trip.
That's what I love most about traveling.
Not buying things.
Finding places.
Checking Into The Wayback Motel & Resort
Later that afternoon, we finally made our way to The Wayback Motel & Resort, where we'd spend the next several nights.
The moment we pulled in, I knew we'd picked something special.
Instead of a typical chain hotel, The Wayback had personality.
Retro charm.
Bright colors.
Thoughtful design.
It felt playful without trying too hard and immediately set the tone for the rest of our trip.
We'll take you on a full tour in a future article because it deserves one all its own.
